About Musical Shabbat Gatherings
Our Musical Shabbat Gatherings offer a joyful way to experience Shabbat through the ancient folk‑singing traditions of the Jewish people. Shabbat with Friends (SWF) invites households to host Musical Shabbat Gatherings in their homes or in lovely venues across New Mexico.
These gatherings create a unique spiritual uplift as participants join their voices around the Shabbat table, deepening connection in ways that feel both timeless and personal. Every event taps the ancient Jewish hospitality practices of sharing a festive meal, singing Jewish table spirituals, engaging in elevated conversation or Torah study, and building friendship and fellowship among the participants.
A unique feature of Musical Shabbat Gatherings is the Oneg Shabbos Ensemble, a musical group that shares the melodic legacy of Sabbath folk songs sung around the table for centuries. These musical traditions include:
-
Nigunim – Hasidic wordless melodies
-
Zemirot – classic Shabbat table hymns
-
Shirim – short scriptural or liturgical melodies
-
Shirei Am– folk songs from Israel and Jewish communities worldwide
Some melodies feel familiar; others are spirited newer compositions chosen to uplift and inspire.
All events are free, open to all backgrounds, and child‑friendly. Meals are typically dairy/fish potlucks.
Pre‑registration is required.
About this Musical Shabbat Gathering:
Pictured above: Steve and Carol Teutsch
Carol and Steven love Santa Fe. They’ve been coming regularly since 2005 and moved here permanently in 2020 to be near their son and grandson. Carol’s a Bostonian and Steve’s from Salt Lake City. They are both retired physicians
Steve and Carol join our Shabbat hosting community as new hosts. We’ll bring in Shabbat with doors to their home open at 5pm and candle lighting at 5:15. We’ll gather for a Shabbat dairy/fish potluck at 5:30 followed by singing with the Oneg Shabbos Ensemble. This weekend is Shabbat Shira-the Shabbat of song. We’ll include several beautiful Nigunim, classical Shabbat melodies including Lecha Dodi and a couple of beloved table songs.
Please preregister and choose a potluck option before Thursday eve, January 29. Limited to 25 persons, so reserve early.
