About Musical Shabbat Gatherings
SWF Musical Shabbat Gatherings offer a joyful way to experience Shabbat through the ancient folk‑singing traditions of the Jewish people. Shabbat with Friends (SWF) invites households to host Musical Shabbat Gatherings in their homes or in lovely venues across New Mexico.
These gatherings create a unique spiritual uplift as participants join their voices around the Shabbat table, deepening connection in ways that feel both timeless and personal. Every event taps the ancient Jewish hospitality practices of sharing a festive meal, singing Jewish table spirituals, engaging in elevated conversation or Torah study, and building friendship and fellowship among the participants.
A unique feature of Musical Shabbat Gatherings is the Oneg Shabbos Ensemble, a musical group that curates the melodic legacy Sabbath table singing sung in Jewish homes for generations. These musical traditions include:
Nigunim – Hasidic wordless melodies
Zemirot – classic Shabbat table hymns
Shirim – short scriptural or liturgical melodies
Shirei Am– folk songs from Israel and Jewish communities worldwide
Some melodies go back centuries; others are brand new compositions. All will have you singing them as you walk out the door.
Musical Shabbat gatherings are free, open to all backgrounds, and child‑friendly. Meals are typically dairy/fish potlucks.
Pre‑registration is required to attend.
About this Musical Shabbat Gathering:
Ethan Stone and Rebecca Sheff are once again opening their home for a Shabbat with Friends Musical Shabbat Gathering—an evening of song, community, and light. Join us for a joyful third Shabbat potluck meal, music and singing with the Oneg Shabbos Ensemble, and a beautiful Havdallah ritual to close the Sabbath together.
About Our Hosts:
Ethan and Becca, originally from Boston, met years ago while working abroad. Ethan, a St. John’s graduate, always dreamed of returning to Santa Fe. They moved here in 2021 and welcomed their daughter, Aviva, in early 2022. Aviva invites other children to play and enjoy the light of the Havdallah candle!
Becca is a civil rights attorney, and Ethan is a security consultant and entrepreneur. They look forward to once again hosting Havdallah in their earthship home nestled in the foothills just outside Santa Fe.
