What is a Nigun Song Circle?

A Nigun Song Circle brings people together to sing nigunim—Jewish spiritual, wordless melodies—and other songs from the Jewish liturgical tradition. Nigunim (plural of nigun) first flourished in the Hasidic world of the 18th century, and today they are experiencing a creative revival through the work of artists such as Joey Weisenberg, Rabbi Shefa Gold, and many others.

The SWF Nigun Song Circle joins a growing network of communities across the country who are rediscovering this joyful, participatory form of Jewish music and spiritual connection.

The SWF Nigun Song Circle is the recipient of a grant from the Hadar Institute’s Community Groups Initiative.

*“A nigun transcends words, allowing us to express beyond what we can say with regular language. Words make distinctions. With words, we define the world and express specific ideas and thoughts. In that sense, language is limiting. Pure melody, on the other hand, is able to express the soul — it’s expansive, it’s unifying.”
— Joey Weisenberg, Hadar Rising Song Institute
