Growing Lavender in the Hill Country

About This Event

Spend an evening immersed in the beauty and fragrance of lavender at the Herff Farm. Begin the experience from 6:00–6:30PM with lavender-inspired bites, cookies, and lemonade, while shopping a selection of lavender products from Doe-Re-Mi Lavender Farm.

At 6:30PM, join Sarah Berringer Bader and Ann Karns for an engaging talk on growing lavender successfully in the Texas Hill Country. Learn lavender growing best practices, the benefits and uses of lavender, and how to select the right cultivars for culinary use, crafts, and the landscape. Sarah and Ann will also share insights on which varietals have shown promise in the Hill Country, drawing from both field experience and varietal trials. Whether you are new to lavender or looking to deepen your knowledge, this class will offer practical guidance and inspiration for growing and using this beloved herb.

Meet Your Instructors

Sarah Berringer has long been inspired by lavender. In 2000, she began growing lavender on her five-acre farm near Portland, Oregon, eventually planting nearly 5,000 plants representing more than ninety cultivars and propagating her own starts from cuttings. Her farm, Lavender at Stonegate, was featured in regional publications, television, radio, and national gardening magazines. Sarah is also the international best-selling author of The Lavender Lovers Handbook. Today, she serves as Director of Farm Education at the Cibolo Center for Conservation, where she is leading a lavender varietal trial in the Teaching Garden to evaluate which cultivars thrive in the Texas Hill Country. She brings decades of hands-on growing, teaching, and plant knowledge to this class.

Ann Karns is the founder and owner of Doe-Re-Mi Lavender Farm, located in Yancey, Texas. Ann’s vision is the driving force behind all they do. A professional musician, Ann spent four years performing in the Army Ground Forces Band alongside her husband, Rob. When not planting, propagating, harvesting, or weeding, she enjoys visiting other lavender farms, reading gardening books, and sitting on the back porch with a good glass of wine, taking in the beautiful view.
