Dutchman

Clay is a middle-class black man riding the subway on his way home when he is approached seductively by Lula, a flirtatious white woman. Using both charm and cruelty, Lula challenges Clay's self-perception, revealing deeper tensions about racial identity and social status. As the conversation unfolds, Clay's frustrations culminate in a powerful outburst reflecting the complexities of African American existence, touching on themes of oppression and the dualities of rage and repression. An emotionally charged and highly symbolic retelling of the Adam and Eve story, Baraka's powerful one-act drama is of mythical proportion, a ritual with the sociological purpose of galvanizing the audience into revolutionary action.
