About This Event
Over the last decade, Drs. Kate and Mark Smaller have been working to further develop the ‘forward edge’ theory pioneered by Heinz Kohut and Marian Tolpin. This in-service training will review the basics of self psychology and the forward edge, while highlighting the questions that Kohut and Tolpin left behind. We will then present how we are addressing those questions through the expansion of theory, the development of a theoretical model, and the research that is currently underway to support that model. The model itself is designed to provide participants with a guide for clinical practice, as well as empirical support for the good psychoanalytic work they are likely already doing.
Objectives: Participants will therefore walk away with: 1) Greater confidence in their current practice, 2) A model that can be used to enhance their practice, and 3) A greater understanding of the need for psychoanalytic research, creative thinking, and collaboration with mental health professionals of diverse backgrounds.
Kate Smaller, Ph.D. is an ICSW alum and founding Co-Director of Forward Edge Services, a clinical practice with offices in Saugatuck/Douglas and Grand Rapids, Michigan. She has devoted her career to improving access to mental health services for underserved groups, beginning with at-risk youth and survivors of sexual assault in the Chicago area. Today, that commitment continues through her involvement with Project Realize and her conceptual research that is currently underway.
Mark D. Smaller, Ph.D., is an adult, adolescent, and child psychoanalyst, and founding Co-Director of Forward Edge Services with offices Saugatuck/Douglas and Grand Rapids, Michigan; and is Founding Director of Project Realize Foundation. He is past president of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and is Executive Director Emeritus of the Neuropsychoanalysis Foundation in New York. He is currently a Clinical Faculty member, Western Michigan University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.
