Psychodynamic Consultation Groups for Child & Adolescent Therapists

About This Event

Course Schedule: Five Mondays - Feb. 9, Mar. 9, Apr. 13, May 11, June 8, 2026 (7.5 CEs)

Where: One meeting per month (VIA Zoom)

Time: 8:30 am - 10:00 am CST

Cost: $325 per person

Description: These groups will create a space for licensed psychodynamic (or those interested in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory) child & adolescent therapists to discuss clinical experiences as well as occasional reading material focusing on psychotherapy with children and adolescents. Our primary aim is supporting and making sense of the unique and challenging aspects of child and adolescent psychotherapy from a psychodynamic perspective. Among the topics to be discussed are: psychodynamic assessment; working with parents/caregivers; play therapy; challenging cases; and, the specialness of adolescents.

Goal:

Generate a supportive, collaborative, and informative discussion group for exploring and engaging the unique aspects of working with children and adolscents from a psychodynamic perspective.

1. Learn different psychodynamic theoretical perspectives on practicing with children and adolescents (e.g. Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, and Relational theory).

2. Explore, identify, and make therapeutic use of personal responses to child and adolescent patients, as well as important others in their lives (countertransference).

3. Learn psychodynamic forms of assessment and intervention (e.g. development, support, play, reverie, containment, interpretation – if/when/why/how, and work with important others).

4. Learn unique aspects of working with adolescents (e.g. uneven brain, importance of peers, sex, identity development, and pressure and loss in becoming an adult).

Presenter: Kevin McMahon, MSW, LCSW is core faculty at the Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW). He has been building curriculum and teaching development courses in the PhD program since 2012 and courses on child and adolescent practice as well as diagnostic systems in the Masters program since 2017. Kevin was also conceptual sequence chair at ICSW from 2019 – 2024. He is a graduate of the child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy (CAPP) program at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. Kevin’s work history includes: over 15 years of private practice; the child and adult clinics at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute; Integrated Assessment program with the Erikson Institute; and, the Jewish Children’s Bureau (JCB) Northbrook community office.

CEs are available for licensed Social Workers and Psychologists.
