Give a Mile. Fuel the Ride. (Update 6/21/26)

UPDATE (6/21/26): Chris Smith’s Tour Divide journey has come to an end, but the adventure and the inspiration continues.

After pushing through one of the toughest self-supported races in the world, Chris made the decision to step away from the ride. While the finish line wasn’t reached this time, we couldn’t be prouder of Chris for taking on the challenge and reminding us that adventure is about so much more than the outcome.

At Waypoint, we believe it’s not always about finishing it’s about showing up, taking the leap, and discovering what’s possible.

Thank you for cheering Chris on. We hope you’ll continue to follow his next adventure and support the mission that makes these life-changing experiences possible for people with disabilities.

This June, Chris Smith — Waypoint Adventure board member and passionate mountain biker — will attempt to become the first para-athlete to complete the 2,700-mile Tour Divide, one of the toughest self-supported races on the planet.

As part of this personal challenge, Chris, who was declared legally blind due to Stargardt Disease, is raising funds on behalf of Waypoint Adventure to support the organization’s mission of expanding access to outdoor adventure programs for people with disabilities. All contributions made through this campaign will be directed to Waypoint Adventure and used to support its programs and participants.

You can power this historic ride! Sponsor a mile for $100 (or give $25/week) and be part of every push, climb, and coast.

Your impact goes beyond the trail. $20 funds one person’s participation in Waypoint Adventure programs, and $100 supports five individuals in building confidence, independence, and community through outdoor adventure.

Give a mile. Open the outdoors. Redefine what’s possible!

Learn More About Chris Smith

On November 4, 2009, Chris Smith was declared legally blind due to Stargardt Disease, a progressive condition causing central vision loss. After losing his driver’s license, a social worker arrived with a white cane—marking a turning point he wasn’t ready to accept.

But his drive for challenge and adventure never faded. Nearly 10 years later, Chris marked the milestone by entering the Leadville Trail 100, “the highest and hardest one-day mountain bike race in America.” The 105-mile course crosses five mountain passes above 10,000 feet, with just 12 hours to finish. Pushing beyond his limits, Chris crossed the line in 11:57:53.

Five years later, he set his sights on an even greater challenge: the Tour Divide.
