Registration has ended

About This Event

Join us December 2-3, as we journey to South Carolina for the next installment of our battlefield tour series and explore two critical battles of the Revolutionary War's southern campaign: the battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens. Both taking part in the latter stages of the war, these two battles resulted in critical American victories that helped turn the tide for the Americans in their reconquest of South Carolina from the British. Launching from our base of operations in Spartanburg, S.C., this two-day experience will consist of a Friday evening dinner and lecture by Dr. Melissa Walker, professor emerita of history at Converse College, and will be accompanied by guided tours of the two battlefields on Saturday. Attendees possess the ability to purchase a full battlefield tour option that includes all aspects of this interpretive experience, or a Friday dinner and lecture only option. See below for additional information. All registration closes on Thursday, November 24.

Dinner & Lecture – The Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens: The American Revolution in the Southern Backcountry

The southern backcountry was the center of the fight for independence, but backcountry devotion to the patriot cause was slow in coming. Decades of animosity between coastal elites and backcountry settlers who did not enjoy accurate representation in the assemblies meant a complex political and social milieu throughout the turbulent time. While examining the political, social, and military history of the southern backcountry, Dr. Melissa Walker, professor emerita of history at Converse College, discusses the events that led to the battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens and offers an important new perspective on the role of the South in the resolution of the fighting during the latter years of the Revolutionary War.

This dinner and lecture will be held at the 1881 Event Hall in Spartanburg, S.C., and is part of a larger two-day program exploring the battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens. Registration closes on November 24, 2022.

Saturday, December 3, 2022, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
