About This Event
The Institute’s research library houses a rich array of rare books, manuscripts, prints and maps that records eighteenth-century history with a focus on the people and events of the American Revolution, and tells both a new, yet familiar, story. To commemorate the birthday of George Washington, join our library staff, along with former research fellow and historian Craig Bruce Smith, for a special viewing of treasures from our library collections relating to the first American commander-in-chief and the first president general of the Society of the Cincinnati.
Held in the research library at Anderson House, this unique program will allow guests to view the objects in an intimate setting, learn about the significance of George Washington and his actions that followed the model of Roman general Lucius Quintas Cincinnatus as he resigned his commission after military victory, and reflect upon what his actions and other events at the conclusion of the American Revolution mean nearly 250 years later. The evening will conclude with a silent toast to Washington, a unique tradition that dates to 1783.
