From the composer who brought us Path of Miracles, Joby Talbot’s Piedra de Sol is a sweeping setting of the epic poem by Nobel Prize–winning Mexican poet Octavio Paz. Written for choir and marimba, this remarkable 70-minute work unfolds as one continuous journey through love, memory, history, and renewal. Paz’s poetry moves freely between the intimate and the universal, while Talbot responds with the vivid, cinematic writing that has become a hallmark of his music—constantly shifting rhythms, colors, and textures that create an immersive musical world.

Like the poem itself, Piedra de Sol is built as a circle: its ending returns us to its beginning, reflecting the cyclical understanding of time embodied in the Aztec Sun Stone from which the poem takes its name. Talbot describes the work as “a journey of infinite dimensions – a voyage whose course bends, advances, recedes, comes full circle and arrives forever.” At moments meditative and dreamlike, and at others rhythmically charged and exhilarating, Piedra de Sol is an extraordinary exploration of time, connection, and our shared search for meaning.
