For over 70 years, Scranton's UNICO Chapter has spearheaded community service efforts, holding the distinction of being the nation's largest Chapter. Their activities enhance life in the local community while supporting national causes and promoting Italian American culture. To facilitate charitable giving, they established the Scranton UNICO Foundation, enabling the organization to host fundraising events benefiting both local and national charities.
A respected physician and leader in the local medical community, Dr. Peter Cognetti has been an active member of UNICO Scranton for many years. In recognition of his life’s passion for helping others, in 2023, Dr. Cognetti was awarded UNICO National’s prestigious Cianci Humanitarian Award for his exceptional dedication and service to mankind.
Peter has a passion for his Italian heritage, a passion for spreading kindness and of course, a passion for his family. He is married to the former Marianne Maroney and they have five children, Sarah, Caroline, Peter, Anne and William, and nine grandchildren.
Dr. Cognetti has provided much-needed medical services during times of disaster and to individuals in poverty-stricken areas. Peter is much more than a medical provider or business professional; he is a leader who upholds the values of human life. Besides volunteering at many community organizations such as the United Way, St. Luke’s Foundation for Haiti, Columbus Day Association, and St. Joseph’s Center, Dr. Cognetti also serves as Board Chair of the NEPA Healthcare Foundation. He clearly exemplifies the values and traditions representative of the true and positive image of his Italian American heritage and is seriously committed to selflessly assisting others – an individual who has taken the meaning of “Service Above Self”.
