Jim Allen and 83 Vines
83Vines was established in 2023 as an online retailer and curated wine club experience to make the Sierra Foothills wine scene more approachable and convenient. Each club release features three hand-selected wines, in a sampler-style package, with notes about the region, its winemakers and vineyards, all from founder Jim Allen’s personal investigations. Jim’s mission is to encourage discovery of the hidden gems of the Sierra Foothills, one bottle at a time.
Jim Allen began as a passionate home winemaker, pursued his wine education at UC Davis, and has engaged with a number of local organizations to promote our local wine culture. His love for the local terroir led him to create his own commercial label, Allen Vineyards, with grapes sourced exclusively from the Sierra Foothills and made to reflect our signature varieties and styles. His wines are available exclusively at 83Vines.com.
Wine List Preview
We're so excited to share a curated selection of wines from boutique wineries in the Sierra Foothills with you! There will be a wider selection at the event, but we wanted to highlight a few here that we’ll taste and talk about. Each of these wines are in the 83Vines catalog and come from Jim's personal winery visits, conversations with winemakers, and passion for finding special wines that showcase our region.
Our first selection comes from Lone Buffalo Vineyards in Placer County. This Viognier is a perfect example of the Sierra Foothills and a key grape varietal in our region. Viognier is a chameleon, and in the hands of winemaker Matt Stone it is presented here in a Rhône style: bright and fruity, with good acidity and stone-fruit flavors. It’s sold out at the winery, and 83 Vines has only two cases left—so this is special. $34 per bottle
The next selection is an estate Syrah from Element 79 Vineyards (a.k.a. Gold or Au) located in the Fairplay AVA at an average elevation of 2400 feet above sea-level. This location provides a wide temperature range between warm days and cool nights, helping to create balanced acidity/tannins, full body and smooth finish for the estate’s vineyard. $42 per bottle
Originating in Northern Italy, Barbera has found a true home in the Shenandoah Valley. Thriving in the rich clay-loamy soils, Barbera has adapted well to the warm summers that bring forth its best attributes: bright acidity and fruity intensity. This 2020 vintage comes from Teneral Cellars in Amador County. Owner Jill Osur is committed to building a business that intentionally reflects the industry’s largest consumer....women. She supports that mission with a commitment to donate 10% of profits to organizations that empower women and promote gender and racial equity. $39 per bottle
Rafiki is the signature red blend from estate-grown Syrah and Zinfandel grapes of Mellowood Vineyards. I chose this wine as much for its savory flavors and lustrous finish as for its warm and welcoming tasting-room experience. A genuine celebration of friendship and tradition from the owner’s Kenyan heritage, Rafiki perfectly captures the warmth and richness of the Sierra Foothills and the owner’s hospitality. With notes of ripe berries, a hint of spice, and a smooth finish, Rafiki invites you to savor the essence of community and the joy of shared moments. $38 per bottle
Tuesday, from my private label Allen Vineyards, is a great example of Foothills Cabernet Franc. The grapes were hand-selected from a boutique two-acre vineyard in Loomis and made to showcase bright red-fruit flavors like raspberry and cherry, with herbal and sometimes spicy notes. Cab Franc can have bell pepper notes, but this wine was crafted-from fermentation to bottling-to reduce those pyrazines and let the fruit shine. A catalog favorite. $29 per bottle
