What is Kirtan?
Kirtan is a simple yet powerful and direct way to connect with self, spirit, source, and community. Participants are invited to sit comfortably, to sing as though no one is listening, clap their hands, and dance or move if they wish.
It is an ecstatic and meditative group singing of the sacred names from the Hindu tradition. It’s a wonderful way to quiet the mind and open the heart, to remember the sacred within oneself and the world, and to connect with people. All are welcome to this easily accessible spiritual practice of call and response singing of mantras with traditional and contemporary melodies.
Who is Kalidasa?
Kalidasa Joseph Getter is a kirtan wallah, singing with harmonium to lead this devotional practice. He is a creative world musician with decades of experience in kirtan, Javanese gamelan of Indonesia, Carnatic classical music of India, experimental music, Jazz, and music for yoga, theater, dance, sound healing, and the circus arts.
In 2020, he co-created the recording, “RELEASE. FORGIVE. A Soundscape for Dying” (available on Soundcloud and YouTube). Serving on the faculty of several music schools, he directs the Wesleyan Youth Gamelan program and is music director of the Oddfellows Playhouse Children’s Circus, both in Middletown, Connecticut. He lived in India for two years, and studied religion at Oberlin College and ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University.
