About This Event
*This program is specifically designed for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers*
Come join us this Fall for two special sessions of our “Mindfulness in Nature” class designed specifically for those living with dementia and their caregivers. These sessions will include short guided sitting and standing meditation with nature imagery, a Mindful slow walk on the trails, and a nature-based group activity utilizing the senses.
This event is appropriate for those with Mild Cognitive Impairment or Mild to Moderate Dementia*, and attendance with a caregiver is required. Additionally, all in attendance must be fully mobile without a mobility aide, and must be comfortable walking across varied terrains, including both paved and unpaved trails.
In the event of inclement weather, we will meet indoors. Cost is $20 per pair – per session. Registration for both sessions is preferred, but sign-up for each session is available. There is limited space in this program. Please contact Kevin Roth at kroth@pennypacktrust.org if the class is full and you would like to join the waiting list.
Optional - bring your own picnic lunch for afterwards at the picnic tables. We can have lunch together!
*Please note that the degree of impairment should not place the person with dementia at risk of becoming lost, becoming agitated and/or aggressive, or otherwise a risk to themselves or others.
*This program is being developed in consultation with the Penn Memory Center.
Instructor
Erica Blatt has a PhD in Environmental Education and has been a professor at Rowan University and the College of Staten Island, CUNY. She has also taught high school Biology and Environmental Science, and has been an outdoor educator in a number of diverse settings. She has completed her certification in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and spent several years using mindfulness meditation and Nature to guide her own process of healing from trauma and anxiety. She has used these experiences to develop the Mindfulness in Nature classes that she teaches at PERT. Most recently, she is a full-time caregiver for her Mom, who has Moderate Dementia/Alzheimer’s, and who is the inspiration for these special sessions.
