Join The Legal Centre for Palestine, Independent Jewish Voices, and the Centre for Free Expression for a timely webinar and discussion of Canada's Combatting Hate Act. This event will take place on Wednesday, August 26th, at 7 PM Eastern.
Bill C9, now in force as the Combatting Hate Act, was ostensibly created to protect marginalized populations targeted by hate crimes. However, many such groups representing these populations opposed the bill from the start, predicting that it would criminalize dissent rather than contribute to the safety of their communities. The Legal Centre for Palestine, Independent Jewish Voices, and the Centre for Free Expression are deeply concerned that this law will be wielded against Palestinians and solidarity advocates, as well as Indigenous and racialized communities already facing overpolicing, repression, and discrimination when exercising their rights.
It is in this climate that we revisit the Combatting Hate Act, starting off with a technical discussion of the law and what the implications on free expression and protest may be as we wait to see the law enforced on the ground.
The event will then move to a panel discussion on the notion of safety that the law attempts to articulate, in the context of recent developments such as the extensive use of hate crime charges in Toronto on activists, a rash of Islamophobic attacks, and a Government–commissioned report on antisemitism on university campuses.
This event will include 30 minutes of audience Q&A.
