On March 16, 2024, a young family of four were struck and killed by a motorist in West Portal. Brazilian-born advertising professional Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, 40, and his 38-year-old wife Matilde Ramos Pinto, a Portuguese-Irish video producer, were killed with their two sons—19-month-old Joaquim and 3-month-old Cauê.

Livable City, in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library, is commissioning artists Michael Brown and David Cole to create an art memorial honoring the family. The memorial will be a bronze statue atop of a pre-cast cement base. It will feature four pillars representing each of the family members. The concrete will have an inscription “together forever, your deep love for each other will be your lasting legacy” sandblasted in Portuguese. The piece will sit on the South west corner of the exterior court yard at the West Portal Branch Library.

To support the creation, installation, and initial maintenance on the memorial, Livable City has a fundraising goal of $85,000 by 2026.
