Volunteer Day: Backcountry Bakersfield Cactus Planting

🌵 Help grow endangered Bakersfield cactus! 🌵

Join Wind Wolves Preserve staff for a hands-on restoration day in the backcountry as we plant native Bakersfield cactus pads! Found exclusively in Kern County, this rare species needs our help—and this is your chance to lend a hand in growing the populations right here at the preserve.

Reservations are required. Space is limited. 

This program is funded by the Outdoor Equity Grants Program, created through AB 209 and administered by California State Parks, Office of Grants and Local Services.

DETAILS

• Check in at the Administrative Center at 8:45 am 
• Recommended for ages 10 and up
• All participants will be required to sign a waiver upon arrival. Minors must have a legal parent/guardian present to participate.
• Reliable transportation required. Volunteers drive themselves to the site, which is located 20-30 minutes one way from the Administrative Center, beyond locked gates. No restroom facilities will be available at the site. NO LATE ARRIVALS OR DEPARTURES. 

Please note this event is subject to cancellation due to weather or other hazardous conditions.

SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING

• weather appropriate clothing (check the weather)
• long pants (protect yourself from ticks)
• close-toe shoes (ankle length hiking boots recommended)
• Gaiters (protect yourself from foxtails & other dry grasses)
• sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
• gardening gloves (limited supply available)
• water/electrolytes
• snacks

SAFETY

• Remember to bring enough water and snacks for each person and pet in your group (it is recommended you bring 1 liter for every 2 hours of hiking/ person).
• Access to shade will be available and short breaks will be provided.
