Please join the Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) for an Hour with the Dean conversation with author Lorissa Rinehart, celebrating the release of Winning the Earthquake, a new biography of Jeannette Rankin—the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress and a lifelong advocate for peace, justice, and the rights of women and children.

Rankin studied at the New York School of Philanthropy, today's Columbia School of Social Work. What she learned and experienced in New York shaped her calling to advance systematic change and become the first woman to serve in federal office.

In this special Hour with the Dean event, Dean Melissa D. Begg, a population health scientist and longtime leader in interdisciplinary education and research, will interview Rinehart about Rankin’s legacy and its resonance with the values of social justice, equity, and community well-being that animate the mission of CSSW. Dr. Begg has served as Dean of the School since 2019 and brings more than 30 years of experience in evidence-based scholarship, innovative curriculum design, and mentorship to this engaging conversation.

The discussion will explore Rankin’s fearless leadership and enduring vision for a more just and equitable society—an invitation to reflect on how history informs our work today.

Founded through a bequest from Rankin’s estate, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation carries her mission forward by awarding unrestricted Scholar Grants to women and non-binary students who are pursuing higher education and transforming their futures.

Space is limited. Please RSVP to attend this Hour with the Dean!
