Advanced with Shlomo Groman: The Epistolary Heritage of Yiddish Writers of Ukraine (1950s–1980s) with Shlomo Groman

Course Goals: This course examines unpublished correspondence of Yiddish writers active in Soviet Ukraine from the post-Stalin thaw to the late Soviet period (1950s–1980s). Based on a newly digitized corpus preserved at the Institute of Jewish Studies in Kyiv and developed into an academic website at Bar-Ilan University, the course approaches letters as primary sources for literary, cultural, and historical analysis.

Course Tools: Close reading of digitized letters by and to such writers as Itsik Kipnis, Natan Zabara, Yekhi’el Falikman, Irme Druker, Pinye Kirichansky, and Note Lurye, as well as editors, critics, translators, and family members.

Additional Info: This course is conducted entirely in Yiddish.
