Course Goals: Mani-Leyb (1883—1953, in America from 1905) is one of the most prominent figures of [in the renewal of] modern Yiddish poetry, a wonderful lyricist, a master of the ballade genre, a beloved children' s poet, in whose words, Yiddish shone in all its glory, its beauty and wisdom. The poet Ruven Ayzland called Mani-Leyb’s fifty sonnets, written at various times and up to the year of his death, “The crowning works of his creation. Everything else he had written before, as beautiful and important as they were, looks as if mere preparation for these ultimate works."
