Course Goals: To study some of the great writers of Yiddish literature while improving listening and comprehension skills.
Course Description: This course will use Sheva Zucker’s book and recordings, Di Goldene Pave/The Golden Peacock as a basis. Through this collection which features the work and voices of 12 Yiddish writers we will become acquainted with the work of poets Itsik Manger, Avrom Sutzkever, Rokhl Korn and Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman, as well as prose writers Sholem-Aleichem and Yekhiel Shraibman. We will also improve our listening skills as we listen to these writers reading from their own work in their various dialects. The contents of the book will be supplemented by other recordings of these writers collected by the instructor.

Additional Information: This course is designed for those with approximately four or more years of Yiddish language study and who have completed Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Vol. II by Sheva Zucker, or the equivalent, and beyond.
This course will be taught entirely in Yiddish.
