Intermediate Literature with Tamara Micner: “East End Jews” (continuation of Fall 2025 semester)

Monday, 12:00 – 1:30 PM ET: Feb. 23, Mar. 9, 16, 23, 30, Apr. 13, 20, 27, May 4, 11

Course Goals: Through the words of 26 Yiddish writers — from Esther Kreitman to Morris Winchevsky — the new book East End Jews offers an unparalleled view into the life, labor, and politics of London’s Jewish East End, from its heyday in the 1890s until the 1950s. We will continue reading and discussing the original Yiddish stories in this book, journeying through the ideas and changes that impacted the community and exploring how the vivid, funny, and moving writings speak to us today.

Course Tools: East End Jews by Vivi Lachs and Barry Smerin for English translations (available here); original Yiddish stories provided by the instructor.

Additional Info: This class will be conducted in Yiddish, and students must be able to read the alef-beys. Purchasing the book is recommended but not required. Participation in the previous semester is not required.
