Monday, 2:00 – 3:15 PM ET: Feb. 23, Mar. 2, 16, 23, 30
Kale Bazetsns and Doinas once formed the core of the klezmer art with their ability to move the listener to tears. Although these slow improvisations have faded from use in the modern klezmer scene, they still inform and determine the klezmer style of playing. Josh Horowitz will provide an easy way through these beguiling musical treasures, leading the students little by little toward a comprehensive way to approach improvisation. Participants will play a variety of opening, developmental, transitional and cadential patterns that make up the doina and bazetsns, then construct larger forms from them. The workshop is intended primarily for melody instruments and is a must for musicians who wish to understand what defines klezmer music and have fun doing it.
