I am taking the 100 Wave Challenge by attempting to catch 100 waves in ONE DAY and raise $1,000 for a remarkable organization called Boys to Men Mentoring.

Boys to Men Mentoring (BTM) is a group mentoring program working to connect hundreds of teenage boys to positive male role models they can depend on. BTM programs include weekly, in-school group mentoring, retreat weekends, beach trips, and other activities all geared to improve each boy's overall self-esteem, critical thinking skills, and self-accountability.

Because of your support, these boys no longer feel alone.

Boys who participate in the program show a significant increase in their self-esteem. As a result of this one factor, their grades improve, they have less discipline issues at home and school, and their dropout rates are dramatically reduced.

In San Diego County alone, there are 49,937 boys growing up in homes without fathers, and a boy without a dad in his life is 20 times more likely to end up in prison. Fatherless children are more than twice as likely to commit suicide, and 71% of high school dropouts come from a fatherless background. 

BTM provides mentors for boys who often have no positive male role models – the men in their lives are in gangs, prison or have abandoned them in most cases. Your support allows them to break the devastating cycle of fatherlessness for hundreds of teenage boys who are working to change their lives for the better.

Your support is ensuring the sustainability of this amazing program. The program facilitates weekly group circles giving each boy a safe space to express their anger, frustration, and insecurities without judgment. They also hold Adventure Mountain Weekend Retreats that challenge the boys to develop the tools they'll need to navigate manhood. BTM is bringing disconnected boys back into our community and encouraging them to be young men of integrity, honesty, and service. This Mentoring program is so successful that after just one year of weekly meetings, these boys are getting the tools they may have missed, they are rerouting their destiny and reconsidering what they thought was possible for themselves and the world.

100 Wave Challenge is the equivalent of surfing a marathon! So, what am I doing? I will be catching 100 waves in ONE DAY with over 150 other surfing participants who have also gone out to raise money from people just like you for BTM. This will be a BIG challenge for me – 100 waves in one day is CRAZY! Of course, I am practicing my finless surfing weekly for hours at a time as I know it will be worth all of my efforts to help support these boys. This is a personal challenge for me, and I am loving the training for the big event.

With the money raised from the 100 Wave Challenge, the Boys to Men holds 59 weekly meetings in San Diego alone -- in 39 schools and 2 evening programs serving more than 800+ boys. 

Our over-all goal is to put Boys to Men Mentoring in every middle school in the country.

ABOUT THE BOYS TO MEN 100 WAVE CHALLENGE 

• The 100 Wave Challenge is the main funding source for the Boys to Men Mentoring Network (BTM), a San Diego-based nonprofit that connects fatherless teenage boys with positive male role models via programs during and after school, including group circles, surf nights, and weekend team-building camping trips. 
• Annual 100 Wave Challenge is a fun surf-a-thon held in Mission Beach, California (Next to Belmont Park) that challenges participants to catch 100 waves in one day. 
• In 2017, the event attracted 171 surfers and raised $373,000; Overall, the event has raised $1,535,000 since its inception in 2010. The event has experienced 78% funding growth and 60% participant growth since its launch. 
• Features: Surf Legend, Shaun Tomson and World Championship Tour Surfer, Damien Hobgood. 
• The 100 Wave Challenge also includes a Surf Angel program that allows non-surfers to participate by helping one of the boys from BTM raise funds to surf in the event.
