I am Spencer. I am taking the 100 Wave Challenge this Saturday, September 27th at Mission Beach benefiting Boys to Men Mentoring (B2M). The funds we raise together will support B2M's efforts to bring positive male mentorship to hundreds of young men in San Diego County. I've been fortunate to have benefited from a handful of male mentors besides my own grandpa and dad. 

When I started participating with Boys to Men, I needed a safe place to discuss things such as how to build self confidence, deal with school bullies, my health issues, and be listened to through discussions with other teens and the mentors. 

Later, I proved I could help the younger students by volunteering at confidence building weekends. Once I proved myself, I joined the ranks of the other Journeymen, the older teens, who were trusted to lend extra support at local events and on mountain retreats where we are given tasks to develop self-esteem. I'm proud to be a journeyman and hope this year I can bring Boys to Men to my own Torrey Pines High School to reach kids who need extra social support from elder mentors during school. 

Boys to Men Mentoring is a nonprofit organization facilitating consistent group mentoring for at-risk, and disconnected teenage boys of San Diego County. Through strategic partnerships with local middle schools, high schools, and community partner locations, Boys to Men connects teenage boys with compassionate mentors who provide the encouragement, empowerment, and accountability they need to thrive.

There is nothing more powerful than surrounding a young man with a community of support and giving him the opportunity to reach his fullest potential. I hope to do that this year by attempting to catch 100 waves in one day to raise money and awareness for Boys to Men.
