Six years ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. I was devastated and had to do one of the hardest things I’ve ever done: step down as the leader of the organization I co-founded and led for 23 years. I went from living a mission-driven life to having to redefine my identity.

I turned to another passion of mine, woodworking. I made some pretty cool stuff, but something was missing.

I followed my doctors’ orders—a strict exercise regimen, brain surgery and new Parkinson’s medications. Slowly, I began to feel my passion coming back. My cognitive abilities improved, and I found myself becoming more involved with Boys to Men again.

As I reconnected with the staff and spent countless hours talking with Joe, I realized it was time to step back in. I told him, “I think I should come back.” His response was simple: “If you’re up for it, we need you.”

I was up for it.

As I stepped back in as Executive Director, my synapses started firing. My spirit lifted. I knew I still had more to give.

Today, I am more excited than ever about Boys to Men and the work ahead. That’s why, for the first time in my life, this 74-year-old Parkinson’s patient is doing something that scares the hell out of me: I’m going to catch a wave.

I’m taking on the 100 Wave Challenge with one simple goal—to catch and stand up on one wave.
