I am 1 in 100
This October, I will be taking on the challenge of moving 100km within the month. This challenge is inspired by the everyday challenges faced by the 1 in 100 Canadians living with epilepsy. The money raised will help move epilepsy research forward in Canada.
I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 21 however looking back, I believe my seizures began around the age of 12. Epilepsy changed my life after the diagnosis in so many ways. In the beginning, I felt like I was losing my independence with things like not being able to drive, the possible risks of having another baby, the impact on my social life, the stigma and lack of awareness. Epilepsy is not just about seizures; it comes with many challenges. Living with fear and anxiety never knowing when one will happen, medication side effects, memory and cognitive issues, and mental health issues. The fear that one of my seizures could result in SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) which occurs in about 1 out of every 1000 people with epilepsy.
Epilepsy does not discriminate and can begin at any time during a person’s life. About 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime. One in every 100 Canadians has active epilepsy.
In accepting the 1in100 Challenge, I hope to raise awareness, challenge myths and help dismantle the stigma of epilepsy. 100% of the money raised will go towards the Epilepsy Canada organization to fund research and fuel hope. Please help support me in my journey to walk 100 kilometers this October.
Thank you, Kim
