For the third year, I’m participating in Epilepsy Canada’s 1 in 100 Challenge in honour of our son, Keegan. ? This year, we’ll be starting the challenge from a very different place; the hospital. On September 29th, just two days before the challenge begins, Keegan will undergo his second and much larger epilepsy brain surgery, removing the remaining affected portion of his right frontal lobe. Keegan isn’t even six years old and lives with drug-resistant focal epileptic spasms. Despite countless medications, specialized diets, steroids and his first brain surgery, he continues to experience approximately eight seizure clusters every single day, with repeated seizures lasting up to 5–8 minutes at a time. Earlier this year, he also underwent an invasive surgical EEG to map his seizures and help create the plan for this next surgery. Yet through everything this incredible little human has endured, he continues to play, laugh, learn and take it all in stride. For families like ours, research means hope. When medications don't work, we're constantly searching for the next option. Right now, for Keegan, that option is another major brain surgery. But with continued research, maybe the next child will have better medications, more precise treatments or less invasive options. Our greatest hope for this surgery is seizure freedom. But above everything, we want to give Keegan a better quality of life and the freedom to simply be a little boy. So this October, my first steps in the 1 in 100 Challenge may be through the halls of the hospital beside Keegan — and I can't think of a more meaningful reason to walk. Every donation helps fund research and brings us closer to better options for people like Keegan living with drug-resistant epilepsy.
