Last August I survived a CVST. I was training for the NYC Marathon. I had a headache for 4 days straight and fainted one morning before going to my PCP. Blood work showed low iron levels and she instructed me to see a neurologist. That Saturday I ran a 15 mile long run and the headache continued. Finally after 10 days and no relief I saw a neurologist who ordered an MRV for the very next day. Just 2 hours after the exam my doctor called to inform me that they found a sizable blood clot in my brain and to make my way to the ER where I was put on Lovenox and Warfarin while they investigated what may have caused this to occur. After extensive blood work the clot was attributed to my heterogeneous Factor V Leiden mutation in conjunction with the nuva ring and dehydration due to running in the summer heat. I was on blood thinners for 6 months. I am finally back to running and will be running the Brooklyn Half on May 18th. It’s been a hell of a journey but with early detection, thorough doctors and a dedication to recovery I am here and healthy. Please help me in raising awareness to encourage early detection and treatment of blood clots!
