As a staff member at SPCA Florida, I see a lot of pets coming through the doors.
One cat who touched my heart was Buster. He was about 10 years old when his owner died and there was no one to care for him. He was so sad and lost. He wasn't eating and grew frailer and sadder every day. He was moved into my office so he would have someone to watch over him.
He was nervous at first in his new surroundings. I I tried different foods. He still wouldn't eat. He slowly warmed up to me and grew more comfortable. I put a bed on my desk so I could pet him more and he stayed there all day. I reached over and rubbed him all throughout the day as I worked. Visitors would pet him when they came in.
One day I opened a new can of food. As soon as he smelled it, his eyes lit up in recognition and he bounded out of his bed to eat. Yes! This was the food his owner fed him. I breathed a sigh of relief and I knew he would be ok. He was adopted by a lovely family and is now living happily ever after getting lots of love in his new home.
And this is why we do it- to heal, give hope and save the lives of precious cats and dogs.
