How Community WAS stronger than Cancer!

As you all know, Purple Plunge is very near and dear to my heart.  Why, you ask?   We were in the shoes of these families.  It's been 9 Years since our amazing, sweet, funny little boy was going through treatment at Rush University Medical Center.   

It was a scary, scary time for all 3 of us.  We were incredibly fortunate thanks to our family and friends who held us together.  Our community was there for us as well.  We had the support of an amazing group of strangers.  They honored Ricky at their St Baldrick's event.  The group leader went on to have a fundraiser to support our family.  This was the beginning of us falling in love with the community in Lake Zurich.  Near the end of Ricky's treatment, he started Kindergarten, bald as a cue ball and using a walker.  We were embraced by the school and all of the amazing children and parents we met on his first day. We gained great friends that day as well.  Ricky hates the attached picture of his first day but it's one of my favorites. We also had the support of a great employer.  Our managers and co-workers supported during that time as well.  We were (and still are) fortunate as our medical insurance was good, FMLA helped tremendously. 

Some families aren't as "lucky" as we were nine years ago.  Some families and/or patients don't have the benefits we have.  What happens when a parent becomes a caregiver and can no longer work because they are in the battle of their life?  What about when the patient is the main bread-winner of the family?  They might not be able to pay the mortgage, the rent or the utilities.  What about the family whose expenses go into a tail-spin with transportation to and from doctor appointments, parking garages, meals?   

The Virtual Plunge will run February 1, 2021 - April 1, 2021.  Here are some of the activities and fun we will have to raise money to help families in and around our community.
