Twelve years ago I swabbed my cheek and joined the bone marrow registry...I went about with my life and pretty much forgot I was still in the system. And then I got the call...I was a possible match for a 5-year-old boy with Leukemia. In January of 2019 I had the opportunity to donate my bone marrow. It's been over two years, and my bone marrow buddy has had a difficult recovery. He went through remission in 2020 but according to the 2-year follow-up report that I received a few months ago, he is currently cancer-free. My bone marrow buddy is still a complete stranger but I feel a closeness to him that I simply can’t explain through words. All I know is that he does not live in America but I truly do hope I get the opportunity to meet him and his family one day. It’s still a long road to recovery ahead for him and doctors will need to continue to monitor his health to make sure cancer doesn’t return. But he is alive. The more people that join the registry, the greater the chances of finding a match and saving a life. It’s as easy as a simple swab.Gift of Life made the bone marrow donation process a breeze! They were there with me every step of the way and continue to check up on me afterward. Please help support a tremendous organization that is literally saving lives every single day.
