FAQ About Steps for Life Virtual 5k
Q: What is a virtual run and walk?
A virtual run or walk is an event that can take place at a location of your choosing and either completed all at once or over time.
Q: How does the Steps for Life Virtual 5k work?
Participants can complete their 5k (3.1 miles) any time between now and Monday, May 24, 2021 at 7 PM ET, and in any location they choose! Once you complete your 5k, simply upload the results to our online form to be eligible for a Top Finisher medal
Join us for the Opening Virtual Kick-Off Ceremony on Monday, May 10, 2021 at 7PM ET. Link will be provided before the kickoff!
As part of your 5k registration, you will receive some awesome Gift of Life swag based on your participation level.

Submit your completion time. You can track your 5k using a wearable activity device (i.e. Apple Watch, FitBit, Garmin, etc.) or time yourself with a phone app. We suggest Nike Run, Strava, or Runkeeper, but any that shows your time and distance can be submitted.
Q: Should I still form a team and fundraise as I did in the past?
Absolutely! You can form a team, send out emails and track your progress on your personal and/or team page. Check out the Fundraising Guide and Incentives for some ideas on how to get started!
Q: Why should I participate in the 2021 Steps for Life Virtual 5k?
Cancer hasn’t stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients in need of life-saving transplants don’t have the luxury of time to wait until donor collections become easier or more convenient. During this unprecedented time, our operations have continued without interruption. Your support is needed now more than ever before to help ensure we can continue to save lives every day!
Q: Who can participate?
Everybody and anybody! There is no age limit and there are no restrictions. So, grab your shoes and run, jog, walk, or skip, it doesn’t matter. Just get out there and get moving!
Q: Do I need to submit my time and photos in order to receive my swag?
No. Your registration will serve as your verification of participation. However, if you want to qualify for one of the Top Finisher Medals, we encourage you to use your wearable activity tracker or time yourself with a phone app. When you complete your 5k, please submit your time.
Q: When will I receive my swag?
Due to added production times for the medals, we will mail you your swag within 6 weeks of the race. Please allow 7-10 days for delivery.
Q: What is the schedule of events?
Registration: Open until Monday, May 24, 2021 at 7 PM ET
Opening Virtual Kick-Off Ceremony: Monday, May 10, 2021 at 7PM ET
Virtual Closing Ceremony: Monday, May 24, 2021 at 7PM ET
Q: Will I be timed?
Yes, by you! You are welcome to time yourself however you’re comfortable. We encourage you to use your wearable activity tracker or time yourself with a phone app. When you complete your 5k, please submit your time.
Q: Is there a certain course I need to run?
No, you are able to run wherever you like. Hit your treadmill or local neighborhood to complete your 5k, just stay safe and continue to adhere to social distancing recommendations.
Q: What are the awards categories?
Awards will be distributed to individuals in the following Top Finisher categories. Be sure to submit your time by 7PM ET on Monday, May 24, 2021. Winners will be announced at the Closing Ceremony on Monday, May 24, 2021.

Q: If I qualify as a Top Finisher, when will I receive my medal?
You will receive your medal by mid-June.
Q: Can I get a refund if I no longer wish to participate?
Unfortunately, refunds are not available and we hope you will consider switching your registration fee over to a donation to Gift of Life.
Q: I don’t live in the United States, can I still participate?
Absolutely! A Virtual 5k means you can participate anywhere in the world!
