Why We Walk

This will be our 2nd year participating in the Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. I was diagnosed with Preeclampsia with severe features at 30 weeks and 4 days and admitted to the hospital on bed rest with the hope that with medical treatment I could remain pregnant until 34 weeks. Our son Logan was born at exactly 31 weeks and spent 72 days in the NICU at Helen Devos Children's Hospital. He weighed only 2.5lbs at the time of his birth. Only 5 days after delivery my blood pressure spiked again to 180/110 and I was re-admitted to the hospital. During his stay in the NICU, Logan required surgery (PDA Ligation) to close a valve that remained open that is meant to close shortly after birth. He came home on a feeding tube but within 6 weeks it was no longer needed. Today Logan is a happy and healthy 3 year old and I'm healthier than I've ever been.

We walk to raise awareness of this disease that can strike women  like myself during and shortly after pregnancy with little to no warning. And for their children born with complications requiring medical intervention to save their lives like our son.
