The story of Jim Proffitt's outreach to homeless veterans and homeless, on and under the streets of Chicago has been chronicled in numerous papers including an article in the New York Times on December 25 ,2010 . An unassuming and humble person that "just went about the business of "leaving no veterans behind".

A fellow veteran himself Jack Picciolo remembers how they would sometimes take time to talk after a day spent giving sandwiches and clothes to over 800 homeless veterans and homeless every sunday for over 25 years. What struck Picciolo about Proffitt was " his immense compassion for people too poor to care for themselves.".

This is the Jim Proffitt I came to know, while we fought a different battle together every wednesday night in a support group for cancer. Even though this year marks the 10th anniversary of his death, his altruism looms great in our hearts and memories.

The financial support given to Wellness House during this season of fundraising , helps guarantee available services and programs for many other veterans and people like me.

Wellness House provides complete cancer care - every step of the way. Whether you have cancer, or you are caring for a friend or family member who is diagnosed with cancer, all are welcome at Wellness House. More than 520 programs are provided each month, both online and in person, to improve physical and emotional well-being and give people with cancer a support network like no other. Because of the Walk, and the generous donations of individuals and businesses, everything at Wellness House is provided free of charge, providing one less thing to worry about when struggling with a cancer.

That's why WE continue to support  ten years later, and joined the Walk, and why I ask you to join me, and my family who live in states far and wide, but have heard this remarkable family story of sacrifice for veterans and homeless.
