Camp Heart Connection's History
Camp Heart Connection is one of Children's Cancer Connection's largest programs. CCC has been dedicated to providing camps for Iowa children affected by childhood cancer and their families for over 35 years. At Children's Cancer Connection they believe in serving the entire family through the entire journey, which makes their camp programming unique and unforgettable. CCC offers 6 different camp programs throughout the year including 1 weeklong Oncology Camp, 1 weeklong Sibling Camp, 2 weeklong Day Camps, a weekend Spring Family Camp, a weekend Fall Family Camp, and a weekend Teen Camp.
Camp programs offer families time to connect with others who truly understand what they're going through and create lifelong memories. They don't have to worry about the cost because all CHC Camps are offered to families at no cost. At CCC, they are dedicated to making sure everyone can experience camp. No one is ever charged any amount to come to camp and they work year round to make sure every camper can have a magical experience!
As the cost of everything is rising, fundraisers like this are more important than ever. When you donate through my Campership Challenge page, you are helping ensure every camper can experience the magic of camp!
Haley's Camp History
Hello! My journey with Camp Heart Connection started in 2021. I had heard about CHC through my time at the University of Iowa's Dance Marathon. I was constantly hearing kids and families talking about how much they love Camp and knew that I had to see what it was all about. Now, having become a pediatric cancer and blood disorders nurse, I know that this is the place for me.
My very first year of Camp was cancelled due to Covid, but I was finally able to attend in person in 2022! My first year, I volunteered on the Programs Team. Programs is responsible for running the activities, singing the songs, and bringing all the hype. While I knew none of the songs, I had the most amazing week and knew that I wanted to come back every year after. And I did. I continued to be a volunteer with Camp Heart Connection for the next 4 years as a 5-8 girls counselor, teen counselor, 5-8 boys counselor, medical staff, and LIT Director. I have volunteered at each of the 6 Camps provided by CCC as well as a myriad of their other year-round programs.
This year I will be returning as one of the Leaders-In-Training (LIT) Directors for Oncology Camp and as the new Float Director for Sibling Camp.
Year after year, week after week, Camp has been a constant joy in my life. It is such an honor to have an impact on campers, former patients, fellow volunteers, and now, the next generation of staff members. Simply put - Camp is, and forever will be, my happy place!
