A 7th-grader made this drawing last fall to represent the dark space that can sometimes make young people feel trapped, but there is hope. The jar has been broken to release the fireflies, which represent beauty and resiliency. Deep, right?! Young people experience heavy emotions, just like all humans do. Unfortunately, with their underdeveloped prefrontal cortex, it can be incredibly difficult for them to process and break free of those overwhelming thoughts and feelings. It is up to us - adults: teachers, coaches, parents, and neighbors - to help youth and teens understand and heal from depression.

Mental Health Matters - in Middle School and Beyond

As a teacher and coach for 16 years, I have had the opportunity to sponsor 1 club, coach 2 sports, work at 6 schools, teach all 14 grades, offer 18 courses, coach 675 athletes, and work with 4,497 students. At least 2 of those students lost their lives to mental illness, and I have seen countless others struggle. If you are able, please donate to help Erika's Lighthouse and I raise awareness about youth and teen mental health.

Erika's Lighthouse is determined to make sure no young person feels alone in their depression. We are dedicated to creating a community of empathy and education. We create middle school and high school teen depression awareness programs so educators and teens can create safe spaces to learn about depression, letting students know they are never alone, and there is somewhere to turn.
