In January 2014, my cousin Sarah lost her battle with depression just three weeks after her 15th birthday. At the time, we were both freshmen at Maury High School—navigating a new environment, new friends, and new routines together. As a naive 14-year-old, I hadn’t yet learned the words “depression” or “suicide,” until they forever changed my family. Over ten years later, mental health remains at the forefront of my heart and mind. Whether it’s my own journey or supporting those around me, I’m committed to speaking openly, educating others, and breaking the stigma. I’m especially proud to carry on this mission, alongside my family, through the Sarah Michelle Peterson Foundation, which honors Sarah’s life and has a mission on saving lives by providing depression and suicide prevention awareness, programs, and resources. This year, I’m honored to run the Chicago Marathon with Erika’s Lighthouse—a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating the stigma around mental health and providing free depression education and suicide prevention programs to any school, anywhere. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to run in support of a cause that means so much to my family and me.

Erika's Lighthouse is determined to make sure no young person feels alone in their depression. We are dedicated to creating a community of empathy and education. We create middle school and high school teen depression awareness programs so educators and teens can create safe spaces to learn about depression, letting students know they are never alone, and there is somewhere to turn.
