When I was five years old, I was taking out the trash. At the top of the bag was a trifold, white brochure written all in a bluish ink, wish some blurry pictures in the same ink. A photo of babies caught my eye - but it was babies piled high into the top of a round, tin garbage can. I took the brochure out, dropped the brown paper bag into the alley trash bin and went into the house with the brouchure. 

I found my mom in the kitchen, and handed the brochure to her, asking why there were babies in a garbage can. As we talked about the details of this day many years later, she recalls taking a deep breath and wondered how she was going to explain a pile of dead babies to her five-year-old. But she knew motherhood, the experience of six pregnancies that came before me, and the Holy Spirit would guide her.

We sat down, and she very gently told me there are people who don't want to keep their babies, so they go to a doctor to have them taken out and thrown away. My five-year-old brain was dumbfounded! "How could anyone throw away a baby?!!" I had asked her in distress and heartbreak. She sadly shook her head and said, "I don't know." 

MANY years later I found out that in a fit of rage and disgust at Roe v. Wade, and in a brief moment of defeat, my mom had swept her arm across the kitchen table that held piles of correspondence, brochures and contacts for the fight and swept them into the trash. However, THAT reaction was the catalyst for ME to keep praying, believing and supporting babies. I have never waivered and never will.

As a small child I knew it was wrong, and that truth continues to guide my support against abortion - because NO baby belongs in a trash can.
