Meet our Honorary Captain: Hunter
Hunter was born on June 13, 2019, via scheduled C-section after a prenatal diagnosis of Campomelic Dysplasia — a rare and severe genetic disorder affecting the development of the airway, lungs, bones, and reproductive organs. This condition often leads to life-threatening complications.
After birth, Hunter spent nearly three months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Albany Medical Center. During this time, he underwent a tracheostomy at just one month old and had a gastrostomy tube (G-tube) placed to assist with feeding. His early days required close monitoring and adjustments to his ventilator settings before he could safely go home.
In late August 2019, three months after his birth, Hunter was discharged and reunited with his family. With support from Building on Love, his family was able to stay current on critical bills during this intense and uncertain time.
Defying the odds, Hunter will celebrate his seventh birthday in June. He enjoys interacting with family and friends, playing on his tablet, and watching Blue's Clues. Despite ongoing challenges, Hunter's enthusiasm for life remains untarnished. His family continues to share his journey to inspire others and advocate for children facing similar challenges.
