Haven, Neville, and the Gift of Independence

DogFest fundraising season is officially here!

I have been blessed with two of the most incredible dogs: Haven and Neville.

They are two very different dogs. Haven was incredibly calm, reliable, determined, and fiercely loyal. Neville is always at the ready, wickedly smart, enthusiastic, empathetic, and full of joyful energy.

So different, yet each one was an absolutely perfect match for the phase of life they entered.

Because of Haven, Neville, and the Canine Companions community that helped raise and train them, I have been able to live independently for the last 11 years — something I did not feel comfortable doing before they came into my life. With a service dog by my side, I know I will never be left with my phone out of reach, a light left on, or my keys on the floor just beyond my grasp.

They are my biggest cheerleaders and my greatest source of pride and comfort.

My story is not unique. Since its founding in 1975, Canine Companions has placed more than 8,000 expertly trained assistance dogs with people with disabilities — completely free of charge.

That is why every year I participate in DogFest: so more people like me can experience the life-changing impact a service dog can make.

Since 2015, with the incredible support of my community, I have personally raised more than $22,000 for Canine Companions. This year, I hope you will help us keep that momentum going!

DogFest will be held on October 3 at Reston Town Center, and it is open to community members and pet dogs. Please consider donating, sharing my page, or joining us as we kick off another season of fundraising for Canine Companions.
