What if the solution to coexisting with our desert climate has been in front of us the whole time – we just need to open our eyes.
Consider the tree you have been driving past your whole life. Mesquites are masters of desert survival– whether growing as a shrub in the middle of the desert, reaching 50 feet tall along riverbanks, or providing a balanced canopy in an urban environment; mesquite trees adapt to their surroundings. For centuries mesquite trees have provided habitat and nutritious food for wildlife and people living in the Sonoran Desert. Sending out tap roots that can reach 150 feet deep and fixing nitrogen to improve soil, mesquite trees create magic just beneath the surface all while we bask in the shade of their canopies. Long before modern infrastructure, these trees were helping communities thrive in an arid climate.
That's magic backed by biology – and Trees Matter is listening and acting. In the heat of the summer our community harvested and milled 180 pounds of mesquite pods into flour to enjoy and explore in their own kitchens. Trees as food, not just landscaping. Come early for a short documentary on how mesquite pods become flour, taste the whole cycle for yourself, and open your eyes to the Magic of Mesquite.
