Why I Walk

I'm a survivor of HELLP Syndrome, which is a rare and life-threatening pregnancy complication associated with pre-eclampsia. Fortunately, my daughter was born healthy and is now a thriving (and sassy) toddler. But after delivery, I developed high blood pressure and vomiting, then hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets (HELLP), which led to spontaneous rupture of my liver. I was admitted to the ICU and needed multiple transfusions of blood and platelets. Then the medical team transferred me to GW Hospital for a possible liver transplant. Thankfully my liver healed, but my kidneys were failing. I underwent dialysis for the next couple weeks, then had fluid in my lungs, but eventually I recovered. The physical therapists helped me recover my strength and get out of the hospital bed, though I needed a walker at first. Meanwhile, my husband, parents, and inlaws took care of the baby at home between shifts visiting me at the hospital. I am forever grateful for their love and the support of family and friends near and far, as well as all the doctors and nurses who cared for me during that time.

I had never heard of HELLP syndrome previously, so now I hope to raise awareness and advocate for more research to benefit other women in the future. Thank you for joining me in spreading the word and working toward a better future!
