Why I Walk

Not everyone knows Winona's birth story or what came after. May 8th I went for my 37 week appointment and my blood pressure was 146/116. I had also gained 5 lbs in just a week, when I had previously had normal weight gain throughout my pregnancy. I was sent right away to be induced and several hours later delivered miss Winnie. Her and I were both discharged 2 days later both seemingly perfectly healthy. My feet and legs were so swollen I couldn't get my shoes on to walk out of the hospital. I was told to follow up in a couple days with my obgyn if the swelling didn't go down. However, Winnie was jaundice and we were going back and forth to children's for the next week until she was finally admitted and put under the lights. Once she was recovered and discharged, I went to my OB's office because I still had severe swelling, chest pain, and shortness of breath. I was told the swelling could take up to 2 weeks to go down and the chest pain was just normal postpartum fatigue. I went back home and my chest pain continued to worsen until I finally went to the ER. At that point my blood pressure had been uncontrolled for nearly 2 weeks, I had developed pneumonia and was going septic. Finally after 3 days in the hospital, being away from my newborn and crying over having to pump and dump breastmilk from the medications I was on, I got to go home. Now 13 months postpartum I still deal with the lasting effects of preeclampsia. There is most definitely a need for awareness on preeclampsia and just how serious it can be both before and after delivery. I am blessed Winnie and I are survivors!
