Why I Walk

On September 10, 2020, I walked into my 26 week prenatal care appointment feeling healthy and excited to get a peek at the baby boy growing inside me. My pregnancy was normal up until that point, and I had no idea that hours later I would be admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with severe preeclampsia. After some good days and some bad days in the hospital, my son Nico was delivered because my platelets had dropped and it was no longer safe for me to continue the pregnancy. We had reached my goal of making it to 28 weeks/the third trimester (+1 day!) but I was devastated and felt that I had failed to do my most important job - to keep my baby safe.

Nico and I are incredibly lucky to be thriving after having had an uncomplicated recovery and 12-week NICU stay, and I know that if the circumstances had been slightly different my family could have suffered unimaginable loss like so many others have. I am walking to raise funds for the Preeclampsia Foundation because we need more research to help reduce the prevalence of preeclampsia, and we need to raise awareness of the symptoms to watch for because they are VERY easy to miss. No one can really tell me why this happened to me and Nico, but I can tell you what would have happened if we had not received such excellent care.

Some stats about preeclampsia:

  • Prevalence: Impacts about 1 in 12 (or roughly 8%) of all pregnancies in the US, a rate that has doubled since 2008.
  • Disparities: Black women face severe maternal morbidity and mortality events from hypertensive disorders at a rate 2.1 times higher than white women.
  • Preventability: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that up to 60% of hypertension-related maternal deaths are potentially preventable with timely, recommended care.
