Epilepsy is more common than many people realize, yet it remains widely misunderstood. About 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime, and more than 3 million people in the United States are living with it today. Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by a tendency to have recurrent seizures, which occur when there is abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can look very different from person to person, ranging from brief staring spells and moments of lost awareness to convulsions. Not every seizure looks the way you might expect!
I was diagnosed with childhood absence epilepsy at four years old, and after years of treatment, my seizures stopped in 2012. I'm incredibly fortunate, but I know that not everyone's journey looks the same.
That's why I'm passionate about supporting the Epilepsy Foundation New England and its work in education, advocacy, community support, and research. Every person's experience with epilepsy is different, and there's still so much work to do to improve treatment options and help individuals and families navigate a diagnosis.
On Sunday, October 25th, Team Dude-K is hitting Slater Memorial Park for the EFNE Rhode Island Walk for Epilepsy! Whether you donate $5, $10, $50, share this page, or join us for a walk, every little bit helps make a difference.
Thank you for supporting a cause that's been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Now let's get moving, raise some money, and kick some epilepsy butt!
