If you have lungs, you can get lung cancer -- whether you are a smoker, former smoker, or never smoker. Lung cancer does not discriminate. Know the facts. Have a heart for lung cancer awareness.
On Saturday, November 7th, our Dedicated to Deloris team will gather for Lung Cancer Connection’s annual Run.Walk.Breathe., in memory of our beautiful and beloved Deloris. Her life was cut short in 2002 after she had received a shocking lung cancer diagnosis that left her and everyone around her, including her doctors, bewildered.
Deloris did not smoke. She did not live in a smoke-filled home. She did not work in or frequent smoke-filled environments. Her development of a “smoker’s disease” didn’t follow the commonly stigmatized “rules” of lung cancer. We will never know for certain just what caused her cancer; however, significant advances in research over the past 25 years suggest a genetic mutation might have played a part.
Today, doctors, researchers, and the public are realizing that cases like Deloris’s are more common than thought before. Nearly 230,000 people in the U.S.A. are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. Of that number, 10 to 20 percent have never smoked or have smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes during their lifetime – just like Deloris.
But hope for change is real. Several emerging technologies are being tested for early-detection efficacy. Treatment options in 2026 are more plentiful than before. And, slowly but surely, the overall survival rate is rising.
That’s why your financial support for Lung Cancer Connection is critical. With a steadfast commitment to increasing public awareness and funding cutting-edge research, LCC was founded to provide resources for patients and their families and to foster a community of agency, information, and hope – lifelines that didn’t exist for Deloris during her cancer journey.
In loving memory of Deloris and in recognition of current and past patients and survivors, we invite you to support our team, Dedicated to Deloris, for this year's Run.Walk.BREATHE. Thank you for having a heart for lung cancer awareness!
Sincerely,
Team Dedicated to Deloris
