You never think it’ll happen to you or your family until it does.

Last year, my little sister became the kid with cancer. Her cancer was incredibly rare, with only about 20 known cases worldwide and very little published research, making it much more difficult for her doctors to create a treatment plan.

I named our team By a Thread after the woman in the Bible who reached for the thread of Jesus’ garment, believing that even the smallest touch of Him could change everything. Throughout her treatment, we would remember this story and have faith that even the smallest thread of Him could be enough to heal my sister.

Because of the location of my sister’s tumor, she lost function in her right leg and struggled to walk. A few days after surgery, I remember her surgeon pulling our family aside and telling us there was a chance she could become fully paralyzed.

“Aerodynamically, a bee’s body is not made to fly, but the bee doesn’t know that and flies anyway.”

Through intensive therapy, determination, and a whole lot of prayers, she regained the majority of the function in her leg. Only later did she find out that her doctors had expected her to be paralyzed.

An experience like this changes the way you see the things you once took for granted. Walking. Running. Moving your body without having to think twice about it.

My team, By a Thread, runs and walks not only to support childhood cancer research, but to recognize the privilege of being able to use our legs to their fullest capabilities.

We were fortunate enough to not lose my sister to cancer. But so many families aren't that fortunate. Cancer has become something we see so often that it can be easy to become desensitized to it. We see the donation jar, hear “Would you like to round up?” and sometimes say no without thinking twice.

For us, this run is a reminder to think twice.

To move because we can. To give because someone else may not get the chance. And to keep showing up for the kids and families who are still fighting.
