Why am I running the Chicago Marathon?

On October 11, I will run the Chicago Marathon both in honor of my mom, Marguerite Quinn Zappa, and as an educator raising funds for Erika's Lighthouse, an organization that provides the leading depression education and suicide prevention curriculum in the U.S..

January 13 was a life altering and unexpected day.

It was the day my mom, Marguerite Quinn Zappa, had died by suicide. The woman known for her vibrant fashion and jewelry, strong opinions, bold spirit, and culinary experiments had an inner struggle that we never fully understood. I have spent the last year and a half navigating the residual ripples of this tragedy. I continue to search for a way to not only honor her life, but cultivate conversation surrounding loss, grief, and the stigmas attached to depression and suicide. 

Education is power. It is compassion. It is prevention. As a middle school teacher, I witness the social and emotional challenges my students face daily. I hope my story can impact my students and their familes recognize the necessity for continued conversation in order to break down the barriers existing around these topics.

And I can't think of a better organization to do this than with Erika's Lighthouse. They are committed to de-stigmatizing depression and providing students not only with hope, but also the tools to care for their well-being. Erika's Lighthouse recognizes the pivotal role education plays in creating change and empowering students to live healthly lives. 

Additionally, running has played an important role in managing my mental health. I have the privilege of spending these hot summer days training with the EDGE running group, who is keeping me strong and on pace!
